The history of neon lighting and signage is a tale of creativity, resilience, and transformation. The Discovery and Rise of Neon Neon’s story begins in 1898 when British chemists Sir William Ramsay and Morris W. Travers discovered the gas. They quickly learned that running an electric current through a glass tube filled with neon produced a brilliant reddish-orange light. This discovery laid the foundation for neon lighting, and by the 1920s, neon tubes were being used in attention-grabbing signs and displays. Neon quickly spread from car dealerships to the now-famous neon billboards of Times Square, New York. Throughout the following decades, neon lighting became increasingly popular, adorning homes, shopping centers, restaurants, and nightclubs. However, the industry faced challenges, especially during World War II when neon tube production slowed down.
